Minecraft Movie Review. A Fun Kids Movie Despite Its Flaws

I liked it, even with all of its flaws. If you go into it just thinking it’s a fun kids movie, you’ll probably enjoy it too.

I’ve been playing Minecraft since 2015, so I’m a long-time fan. It’s been a huge part of my life, and honestly, it’s the reason I got into gaming in the first place. It also got me into building my own PC, technology, cybersecurity, and modding, especially. It’s just so cool to see it come to life in a movie, even if it’s not perfect.

Jack Black and Jason Momoa? They’re the best part. They’re hilarious together and definitely got the most laughs from the crowd. The kids, though… not great. Their acting was a bit rough, and the movie spends time introducing side stories about them that just get dropped with no real payoff. Some of that could’ve been cut out, for sure.

Also, I couldn’t help but laugh at how kinda homoerotic the moments between Jack Black and Jason Momoa were. Like, they literally said, “Let my hips guide you.” I was waiting for them to kiss at any point. This movie’s wild.

But the world, man. That’s the star of the show. Just like in Sonic and Mario, seeing the Minecraft world on the big screen was amazing. I was oohing and aahing every time the camera showed iconic places and items from the game, fun moments everyone’s lived through. Kids will love it, and honestly, I was right there with them. The world was just so well done.

This movie was almost a disaster, but somehow it turned out to be a fun watch. If they replace the kids with better actors and clean up the writing a bit, they could turn this into a solid franchise.

It’s only 101 minutes, and honestly, I think it’s a bit of a lobotomy, but in a fun way. It’s gonna continue to make a ton of money, I’m sure of it.
